Jim Bossert named new Clovis swimming & diving head coach
Clovis Community College Director of Athletics James Sewell has announced the hiring of Jim Bossert as the new head coach of the Crush swimming and diving program.
"We are excited to welcome Jim Bossert to the Crush Family to lead our Swim & Dive program," said Sewell. "Coach Bossert has an outstanding pedigree in the sport, both as a student-athlete and as a coach, and understands firsthand the value of creating a comprehensive and compelling student-athlete experience. Jim also has strong connections within the local Valley swim & dive community, and we are confident that he is the right person to elevate our program both at the conference and state levels while preparing our Crush student-athletes for success in the classroom, in the pool, and in life."
Bossert comes to Clovis from nearby Fresno State where he served as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs this past 2021-22 season. He primarily coached athletes that competed in events 200 yards or less while also serving as the NCAA Division I program's recruiting coordinator.
"I'm very excited and humbled for the opportunity to be the head coach of the swimming program at Clovis Community College," said Bossert. "There is a great history of success with the program. I look forward to building on that success and achieving new heights with our young men and women."
Bossert has been on the job since late October and has been preparing his men's and women's squads for action this upcoming spring 2022 season. With little time to recruit, he'll use this first season to slowly build up the program.
"Short-term goals for the team would be to have every athlete swim some personal best times and hopefully qualify some athletes for the state championship meet in May," Bossert said. "But mainly, my goal long-term is to develop our student-athletes into men and women that are confident in who they are and what they can achieve. Athletics is about building people and I whole-heartily want that for this team."
Prior to his arrival to the Valley, he had a four-year stop at the University of Wyoming as an assistant swim coach. Taking charge of the sprint group the final two years of his tenure (2019-20 and 2020-21), the men finished in the top three of the Western Athletic Conference Championships while the women finished in the top four of the Mountain West Conference Championships.
He coached the short axis and IM groups during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 season while helping lead the men's team to its first conference championship in 59 years when the Cowboys won the WAC championship in 2018.
During the 2016-17 season, Bossert served as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Alabama, working specifically with the middle distance and distance swimmers. He took over the breaststroke and individual medley group in February 2017 prior to the SEC Championships, as the full-time group was out with an illness.
His other coaching experience includes working with Clovis Swim Club (2022), Crimson Tide Aquatics (2016-17) and the California Baptist University Age Group Swim Team (2015). He also worked at the United States Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. during the summers of 2012-2014.
As a student-athlete, Bossert swam collegiately at NCAA Division III Grove City College in Grove City, Pa., from 2011-2015 and at NCAA Division II California Baptist University (CBU) in Riverside for the 2015-16 season. He completed his bachelor's degree in accounting from Grove City in May 2015 and earned his master's degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise science in May 2016 from CBU.
He is married to Ali, who he met while at CBU, and they have one son, Charlie.
